Come to me  a poem by Mohamed Ahmed Khalifa   Translated by Sihem Hammouda

Come to me .Make me into a cover,
And sell my hands out.
I have  worn  you  for  four  seasons  and  a year .Haven’t   I ?
You  know  how  patient  and  benevolent  I  am .Don’t  you ?
I squeezed  into  a  majestic  dress  covering  me .Didn’t  I ?
I sipped your love across my lips. Didn’t I?
That my gaze becomes an inferno,
And my head penetrates deep into my lungs.
Come to me
Come  because  some  nights
Will  remain  tattoos  and  carvings
On my arm .
And  stars  that  I  brought  are made  into a scarf
Or a curtain to give to you .
Wake up ! I am going to count my age .
Your  face  stands  the  test  of  time ,
Ridding love brook that
Swaggers and shines like a sun
In my  eyes.

We lived in a time when we witnessed
Rituals of insanity shining through ground and Pleiades,
Persian, Roman, and  Arab battles
Burning furnace and tyrannical zeal ,
But you pass by me with a drawing
That will always be a bashfulness on my cheeks.
You are made of diamonds. If diamond sings
I drop dead.
 I saw you
Human scented candles .
Since you  invaded my diction ,
You  have dwelled in it till death .
Aren’t  you an Oryx
Trailing freshness in my planet ?
That I become handsome but because of  earth brownness
I look miserable.
Come to me.

Come and die on my land and voice
Come  and let’s  perch  on  the  land  of coupling
There  my food ,my escape and my bewilderment .
There we boarded a cloud ,the purple of the violet,
Raining  love  and  longing.
There our parched lips are quenched
And walked together across the sidewalk of kisses
Come and let’s   spread the palm of  beauty
Come and let’s  Stay
Like a pageant of clouds migrated  while he was a child and  returns home
A young man  to carry a rain once performed ablution
And prayed a unique nectar and  a clear confession
Like a branch of a tree  apostrophizing  sky and life
Come and let’s heal poetry evenings and play
Like two birds that never want  to leave  each other
Or soar towards  unattainable frontiers .
Come and let’s stay like two caged birds
Till  death do us apart .
